WEEK OF JANUARY 2 - 6



WELLS' LANGUAGE ARTS


**Spelling – We will have a test over these words on Friday, 1/6.
sooner, soonest, hotter, hottest, busier, busiest, happier, happiest, smaller, smallest, fatter, fattest, angrier, angriest, straighter, straightest  BONUS:  question, popular, neighbor, taught, research
 


**English
We will learn how to correctly use am, is, are, was, and were.

** Reading
  We will read the story “A Weed Is a Flower”.  We will do related comprehension, vocabulary, and skills activities.  Our focus will be cause and effect.

**Writing
We will write about ideas we have had and about tools that can be used for research.


**HOMEWORK
We will have a take home reader on Tuesday this week.  Your child will bring home a story that should be read to an adult.  The story booklet should be signed by the person listening to the story and returned to school on Wednesday.



**BOOK IT – JANUARY GOAL – 250 MINUTES  - DUE 1/30.
For the next few months we will be participating in the Book It at-home reading program sponsored by Pizza Hut.  At the beginning of each month your child will be given a calendar with that month’s reading goal.  Your child will read the specified number of minutes, have the calendar signed by an adult, and return the calendar to school by the due date.  When the calendar is returned to school, I will give your child a coupon for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  Your child will also receive a 100% as a Book It reading grade.  Failure to complete this assignment will result in a 0% as a Book It reading grade. 




WELLS' MATH

We will learn the following new concepts this week:
*  determine the value of money
*  pennies, nickels, and dimes
*  quarters and half-dollars
*  counting coins
*  problem solving strategy
*  dollar
* addition and subtraction with regrouping

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will learn the following concepts this week:
*  mountains
*  glaciers and volcanoes
*  valleys and plains
*  islands and peninsulas
*  oceans and streams of water
*  lakes and ponds

WEEK OF DECEMBER 12 - 16


12 DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS!!!!

**CHRISTMAS PARTY - Thursday, December 15, 1:15 p.m.


WELLS' LANGUAGE ARTS

We will not begin a new story this week.  We will use these days to review previously learned skills.

READING - We will read these Christmas books and do related skills:  Wild Christmas Reindeer, Night Tree, Mrs, Santa Claus, and the Polar Express.  I will also share some of my favorite Christmas books with the students.

ENGLISH - We will review sentences, nouns, verbs, compound words, ABC order, prefixes, and synonyms. 

CURSIVE - We will learn these lower case cursive letters:  c, g, and q.

WRITING - We will follow the writing process from brainstorming through the final copy on a Christmas topic.

SPELLING - We will have daily spelling bees.

WELLS' MATH

We will review addition and subtraction with regrouping.  We will review the 2, 3, 5, and 10 multiplication tables.  We will play multiplication football with the 3's table in order.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 5 - 9

BOOK IT IS DUE DECEMBER 14.  The reading goal for December is 100 minutes.

SPELLING.... We will have a test over these words Friday, Dec. 9.

ENGLISH.....We will learn more about verbs.

READING.....We will read the story "Rosa and Blanca".  We will will do related comprehension, vocabulary, and skills activities.  Our focus will be theme/plot and predicting.

WRITING.....We will write about solving problems and being generous.

CURSIVE.....We will learn these lower case letters:  y, z, a, d, and x.

HOMEWORK.....We will have a take home reader on Tuesday.  Your child will bring home a story that should be read to an adult.  The story booklet should be signed by the person listening to the story and returned to school Wednesday.

THURSDAY BOOK STUDY.....  The boys will continue to read with Mr. Harper, and the girls will read with Mrs. Wells. Assignments are due on Thursday.

* take chapter 6 tests
* learn the 3's multiplication table
* review the 2's, 5's, and 10's multiplication tables

THURSDAY BOOK STUDY - The boys will continue to read with Mr, Harper.  The girls will read with Mrs. Wells.  Each group has an assignment that is due the next Thursday.

CURSIVE - We will learn the following lower case cursive letters this week:  n, m, p, o, and v.

*problem solving strategy - write a number sentence
*subtract one-digit numbers from two-digit numbers
*subtract two-digit numbers

THANKSGIVING BOOK STUDY - We will be reading The First Thanksgiving.  In addition to learning about the Pilgrims' voyage, we will focus on restating the question to write each answer in a complete sentence.

CURSIVE - We will learn these lower case letters:  f, h, j, and k.

WELLS' HOMEROOM



**NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7 - 8, DUE TO TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DAY AND ELECTION DAY.

**Patriotic Poster Contest - Due November 10 (optional)
     Students may create a poster showing pride and patriotism for their country.  They may choose to incooproate Veterans' Day by showing what this day means to them.

**Thanksgiving lunch will be Thursday, November 17th.  Our homeroom will eat at 12:20.  Please RSVP.

**Family Literacy Night - Thursday, November 17th.  Details will be listed in the Highland Express.


WELLS' READING CLASS

**THANKSGIVING FAMILY AFFAIR TURKEY PROJECT IS DUE THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10.

**NOVEMBER BOOK-IT READING GOAL OF 250 MINUTES IS DUE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29. 

Since we are only in school three days this week, we will not begin a new story.  We will use these days to review previously learned material.
          Spelling - daily spelling bees
          English -  review verbs, letter writing, and 4 types of sentences
          Daily Oral Language will continue.
          Reading - Unit 2 reading test
               review of main idea
               review author's purpose

We will begin a class book study of The First Thanksgiving.  This indepth study of the Pilgrims' search for religious freedom in one of my favorite studies.

Thursday Book Study - Mr. Harper is reading Dinoasurs with the boys.  I am reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8 with the girls.  This is a fun learning experience for all involved.  The students will have a weekly assignment to read at home prior to each Thursday.  We will do this 30 minutes each week.



WELLS' MATH CLASS

     *add one-digit and two-digit numbers
     *add two-digit numbers
     *estimate sums

We will continue to practice our 2's, 5's, and 10's multiplication tables in order and in mixed-up order.
